Jack Halliday was born on Rothesay and educated at the University, where he graduated MA and LLB (with distinction). He bacame a partner with the Glasgow solicitors Bishop, Milne & Boyd and in 1955 he was appointed to the University's part-time chair of Conveyancing. He published a large number of influential papers and books, most notably the four-volume Conveyancing Law and Practice (1985-1990).
