Queen Victoria
Biography of Queen Victoria
Victoria (1819-1901), Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, and Empress of India, reigned from 1837 until her death. She founded four chairs at the University and contributed to the cost of building the new University buildings on Gilmorehill.
Victoria founded the Regius Chairs of Forensic Medicine and Theory of Physic in 1839, although the chairs were not endowed. She established the Regius Chair of Civil Engineering and Mechanics in 1840. The Regius Chair of English Language and Literature was founded in 1861.
The physician David Daniel Davis (1777-1841), a graduate of the University, was in attendance to the Duchess of Kent at the birth of the future Queen Victoria in 1819.
