Biography of Anne Hamilton Duchess of Hamilton
The Hamilton Bursaries were founded in 1694 and funded by a gift of 18,000 marks from Anne, Duchess of Hamilton (1632-1716), known as "the Good Duchess Anne".
Anne was the daughter of James, 1st Duke of Hamilton. She inherited the family estates at the age of 19 and took responsibility for their management for the rest of her life. With her husband William Douglas, 3rd Duke of Hamilton, she built Hamilton Palace.
