Biography of Sir John Trail Cargill
Sir John Traill Cargill (1867-1954), 1st Baronet, endowed the Cargill Chair of Applied Physics, which was founded in 1920 and renamed the Cargill Chair of Natural Philosophy in 1945.
Born in Glasgow, Cargill was the second son of the Chairman of the Burmah Oil Co and the brother of David Traill Cargill. He joined the firm's Rangoon office in 1890 and in 1904 he succeeded his father as Chairman. He retired in 1943.
Cargill was created a baronet in 1929. He served on the University Court and was awarded an LLD in 1929.
