Biography of John E Macfarlane

The Macfarlane Chair in Experimental Medicine was founded in 1962 and funded by the the income of benefactions made to the former Board of Management of Glasgow Royal Infirmary by Robert F and John E Macfarlane, biscuit manufacturers.

In 1817 John E Macfarlane's great grand uncle, James Lang, founded the bakery business that grew to become Macfarlane Lang & Co. John and his brother Robert inherited the business, and together they became generous benefactors of cancer research and other charities. John was a member of the Board of Management of the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, 1941-46.
