Victor William Mercier was born on the 19th September 1892 in Mauritius; his father, William, worked as an iron monger.

He studied at the University of Glasgow for just one year between 1914 and 1915 and took subjects related to Engineering (Maths, Natural Philosophy, Chemistry and Physical Laboratory). During this time he was also a member of the Officer Training Corps which prepared him for his time in the army.

In February 1915 Victor was made 2nd Lieutenant and was gazetted to the 3rd Royal Scots Fusiliers. He was later attached to the 1st Royal Scots Fusiliers. He fought and died on the first day of the Battle of Loos, the 25th September 1915.
