Alexander Nicol


Alexander Nicol was born in 1894 in Greenock, Renfrewshire, to John S. Nicol, a coal merchant, and Agnes Berwick, of 85 Brisbane Street, Greenock.

Alexander came to the University of Glasgow for a single academic year, 1913-1914, to study Law and won a prize in Mercantile Law. Prior to this he had been a Chartered Accountant with Kidson, Goff and Findlay of Hope Street in Glasgow. He was also a cricketer and played for Glenpark CC in Greenock.

During the war Alexander was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th Bn. Argyll And Sutherland Highlanders. He fought in Gallipoli and was killed in action on the 12th July 1915, aged 21. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial along with the names of more than 21,000 casualties of the Gallipoli Campaign.
