Alasdair (Alexander) Smith MacCallum
Alasdair Smith MacCallum, sometimes known as Alexander, was born on the 1st December 1892 in Oban, Argyllshire, Scotland. His father, John MacCallum, was a postmaster.
Alasdair studied at Oban High School and then went to the University of Glasgow where he studied between 1910 and 1913. He took a variety of Arts subjects including: English Literature, Latin, Mathematics and Moral Philosophy.
Following his studies he went to Canada as a missionary and upon the outbreak of war he was working as a ranch-hand.
Presumably because he was in Canada at the time, Alasdair joined the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery as a Gunner, enlisting on the 23rd September 1914 in Valcartier, Quebec. Prior to this he had spent a few years in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 8th Battalion.
Alasdair was thrown from his horse and sent to Maresfield Camp Hospital in Sussex, where he died on 2nd July 1915. He is buried in Oban Pennyfuir Cemetery.
