Edward McGuire
Student
Edward McGuire, also known as Teddie, was born on 14th September 1894 in Glasgow. Aged nine, he went to Stonyhurst College where he studied until he went to university. At Stonyhurst Edward was a prominent player in school games, particularly football.
Aged 17 he started his studies in Medicine at the University of Glasgow which would be cut short by the war. During his time at university he was a member of the Officer Training Corps.
Upon the outbreak of the First World War he was among the first to apply for a place in one of the new formations of the Highland Light Infantry. Until May he was training in Aldershot and Bramshott and then went on to France with his battalion. He was killed leading his company during the Battle of Loos on the 25th September, just days after his twenty-first birthday which had been spent in the trenches. His Colonel wrote that:
"his conduct was beyond all praise, and his courage cannot be expressed. He is the greatest loss to the battalion and myself".
