Roll of Honour
Lieutenant
Frederick James Gordon Rolland
MA
Lieutenant Frederick James Gordon Rolland was born in Paisley on the 28th of July, 1893 to Mr and Mrs William Rolland. Rolland attended Glasgow Academy on Great Western Road until 1910, he then enrolled at the University of Glasgow (which was only a few streets away from the Academy), graduating in 1913 with an M.A. At university, Rolland was a very capable student, interested in a variety of subjects. He studied Latin, French as well as Botany, Zoology and Practical Anatomy in which he was awarded a 2nd Class Certificate of Merit in his final academic year. He had plans to pursue further studies and enrolled in Medicine at the University of Glasgow whilst residing in nearby Partick.
Rolland volunteered to join the war effort a year later and served in the 8th Battalion attached to the 6th Battalion of the King's Own Scottish Borderers. Sadly, Rolland would never complete his course in Medicine and fulfil his potential as a very capable doctor. He was killed in action at the Loos on the 25th of September, 1915 at the age of 22. He is remembered by the Loos Memorial.
