Samuel Andrew Cunningham


Samuel Andrew Cunningham was born in Edinburgh in 1888. His father, James, was a banker and they eventually moved to Dunrod, New Cumnock, Ayrshire and lived in the Bank of Scotland building.

Samuel initially studied at New Cumnock and Cumnock Schools and then went on to Ayr Academy. In 1907 he came to the University of Glasgow for two years to study Law. He was a good student and won prizes in both of his classes: Scots Law and Conveyancing.

During the war he was in the 5th Royal Scots Fusiliers and was a Captain and Instructor of Musketry. Captain Samuel Andrew Cunningham died aged 27 on 12th July 1915 and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial.
