Roll of Honour
Lance Corporal
Peter Campbell
MA
Peter Campbell was born in Helensburgh on 18th June 1890 to James Campbell, a postman, and his wife, Margaret (née Packham). He attended the University of Glasgow from 1909-1912, where his subjects included English, Latin Prose and Greek, the latter taken to Honours level. An impressive scholar, he gained a first-class certificate of merit for Logic and Metaphysics in his final academic year, and graduated with an M.A. in 1912, at the age of 22.
Campbell then progressed to a one-year teacher training course under the Glasgow Provincial Committee for the Training of Teachers (forerunner of Jordanhill College of Education, now the University of Strathclyde). He was a popular student and completed the course successfully to be recognised as a certificated teacher from 1 August 1913. Campbell subsequently taught at Dovehill Primary School before volunteering to join the war effort.
Peter Campbell served as Lance Corporal in "A" Company of the 6th Cameron Highlanders. Sadly, he never returned to his teaching post as he died of wounds received at Hill 70 on 30th September 1915, aged 25. He is buried at Lapugnoy Military Cemetery and is remembered on the Glasgow Education Authority Memorial to teachers, the Glasgow Provincial Training College memorial on the former Jordanhill campus, and at Dovehill Primary School, as well as on the Helensburgh War Memorial.
