Fire broke out in the early evening in the basement of George Service House, which was being used by the Cecilian Society. It was later reported that an electric light had been left burning close to a store of costumes, igniting the fabric. Thanks to the quick response of security staff, the building and the neighbouring Research Club were evacuated and no one was hurt. The fire was extinguished by the fire brigade.
