Biography of Professor Ke Gong
Prof Ke Gong
Professor Ke Gong was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of the University (DUniv) from the University of Glasgow during the Commemoration Day ceremony on 15th June 2016. This award marks the important links the University has with Nankai University, of which Professor Gong is President, and which is one of the University’s most significant academic partners.
Professor Ke Gong studied at the Beijing Institute of Technology, receiving a BA in 1982 before going on to do a PhD in Technical Science on wave propagation in satellite links at the Technical University Graz. In 1994 he became a full professor and headed the Department of Electronic Engineering and Tsinghua Aerospace Technology Research Centre. In 1999 he became the Vice-President of Tsinghua University, in Tsinghua he was also Director of the National Laboratory for Information Science and Technology there. the Russian Academy of Aerospace Sciences gave him a fellowship in 2002. In 2006 he became President of Tianjin University until he was elected President of Nankai University in 2011.
He holds a range of important international and national positions. He has been Vice-President of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations and the Chair of its Committee on Information and Communication since 2009. In China he is Vice-President of the Chinese Institute of Electronics, Vice-President of Chinese Institute of Communications, and Member of the Standing Committee of China Association for Science and Technology. He is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the UN Secretary-General.
