Biography of Professor Sir Peter Knight

Professor Sir Peter Knight was awarded an Honorary DSc by the University of Glasgow at the Commemoration Day ceremony on 17 June 2015 for his services to science and scientific policy.
Sir Peter is Senior Research Invesigator in the Physics Department at Imperial College London, and Senior Fellow in Residence at the Kavli Royal Society International Centre at Chicheley Hall. He taught at a number of institutions in the UK and US before joining Imperial College in 1979, namely Sussex University, University of Rochester, Stanford University, Johns Hopkins University, and Royal Holloway College, London University.
He previously held the post of Deputy Rector (Research) at Imperial College, retiring in Sep 2010, was President of the Institute of Physics from 2011-2010, Chair of the Defence Scientific Advisory Council at the UK Ministry of Defence (until Dec 2010), was a council member of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (until 2012), and was Chief Scientifical Advisor at the UK National Physical Laboratory (until 2005).
Sir Peter was knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in 2005 for his work in optical physics, and received his Honorary degree from the University of Glasgow for his work as a prominent and influential scientist.
