Pamela Starforth Jones was a graduate of the University of Glasgow. She was born in Manchester on 16th October 1922. Her father, Leslie Amiel Jones, was a research chemist and works manager.

In 1939, Jones first matriculated at the University. She embarked on an arts course, studying Geography and French in her first year, English, French and Spanish in her second year, and Moral Philosophy and Spanish in her third year. She graduated MA on 26th June 1942.

After her graduation, Jones is recorded as continuing to reside at 37 Maxwell Drive, her address from her student days. However, in 1947 she married Douglas Victor Gordon, a dental surgeon, at St Ninian’s Church in Pollokshaws. The couple then moved to England, residing in Ladbroke Grove in the west of London. Jones worked for a time at Bletchley Park, the UK’s code-breaking centre during the Second World War.
