Biography of William Kirkland
William Kirkland was Janitor of the Old College of the University of Glasgow from 1832 until his death in 1845.
He was possibly the seventh child of James Kirkland and Jean Menzies, of Barony, born 31st May 1793. University records first mention his name in 1832, in a document which he signed as witness (reference GUA 18659). On 30th November 1832 he was married to Ann Buchanan by Principal Macfarlan.
William's nephew (also named William Kirkland), who lived with the Kirklands, married into the University community in February 1844. His wife, Margaret Taylor, was the daughter of a Porter of the Old College, William Taylor. The two were married by James Cameron, who had gained his MA from the University in 1840.
William Kirkland worked as Janitor to the University for many years. Following his death in 1845, University accounts show that a payment was made to a Mrs Kirkland.
