Biography of Ruth Hoffman

Ruth Hoffman
Ruth Hoffman

Ruth Hoffman was born on the 22nd of January in 1922 in Vienna. She studied at the University of Glasgow and in 1945 graduated MBChB. Originally Ruth’s father attempted to send her to Switzerland to learn about fabric, however after being denied a visa Ruth moved to Scotland and began attaining the necessary qualifications in order to study medicine at the University of Glasgow.

Ruth studied subjects such as Medicine and Radiology and after graduating Ruth gained positions at psychiatric hospitals including Rubery Hill, Birmingham and Warlingham Park, Surrey. Disaffected by interventionist methods of treatment, Ruth turned to Jungian psychoanalysis and worked in child guidance clinics in London, and in private practice. During her career she worked with many leading Jungian figures, such as Michael Fordham.

Ruth was fluent in numerous languages including German, English, Italian, French and Polish. She also supported many charities and causes including the University of Glasgow, in gratitude for her studies here and the opportunities it gave her.

Ruth Hoffman died in 2013 at the age of 91.
