Biography of Ronald John Primrose Cowan

Ronald John Primrose Cowan graduated BSc from the University in 1936. He was born on 1st November 1913 and was educated at Glasgow Academy before beginning his studies at the University in 1931.

Cowan was involved in one of the greatest engineering feats of the Second World War: the creation of the floating harbours Mulberry A and Mulberry B. These were designed to solve the problem of a suitable port on the European Coast that was big enough to take the large supply vessels and equipment vital for the 1944 D-Day landings.

The floating harbours were manned by two special companies of the Royal Engineers (969th and 970th) and by the US Navy Construction Companies knows an Seabees. Among the Royal Engineers manning the ‘Mulberries’ was Ronald John Primrose Cowan.
