Biography of Donald Macdonald

Donald Macdonald studied Engineering at the University from 1910 until 1915. He was born on 31 January 1893, the youngest son of Elizabeth Fyfe Macdonald of Glasgow and Symington Macdonald of Carron, who both immigrated from Scotland to Mount Carbon, West Virginia before the birth of their children. His father worked as a mining engineer and general manager of the Kanawha Colliery Company.

Macdonald followed in the footsteps of his two eldest brothers and enrolled at the University of Glasgow in 1910 at the age of 17. Like his eldest brother Symington, he studied Engineering and attended such classes as Mathematics (Ordinary) and Mathematics VI; Natural Philosophy (Junior and Senior); Engineering I, II, and IV; Chemistry, Chemical Lab, Engineering Lab (Junior), Geology, Mining I, Engineering Drawing (Junior and Senior), Drawing (Special), and Metallurgy.

He left the University in 1915 and returned to West Virginia.
