Ruth Louvish

Biography of Ruth Louvish

Ruth Louvish graduated MA from the University of Glasgow in 1933.

Louvish was born at Radnitz, Austria, modern day Radnice in Czech Republic. Her father Nathan Louvish, a printer and stationer born in Russia, brought the family to Glasgow, where they resided at Thorncliffe Gardens in Shawlands. He ran a printing business located at 116 Gorbals Street (taken over by the Publicity Printing Company in 1948). Nathan and his two children, Ruth and Misha, became British citizens in November 1928 and were also known by the surname Lewis.

Louvish enrolled at Glasgow University in 1930 at the age of 19 and was a recipient of the Carnegie Trust Fund. She took classes in Moral Philosophy, Botany, English, Education, and French and German to honours level, graduating on 30 June 1933, two years after her brother, Misha Louvish.

After graduation Ruth became a teacher in Glasgow.
