Biography of Herbert Peter Macpherson Hardy

Herbert Hardy, c.1906
Herbert Hardy, c.1906

Herbert Peter Macpherson Hardy enrolled at the University for a year in 1905 to study Mercantile Law under Lecturer William Shaw.

Hardy was born in Valparaíso, Chile, one of six sons of John William Hardy, whose occupation he described as paper merchant. John William Hardy established Hardy & Company, which is now the customs agency, Agencia de Aduanas I P Hardy y Cia Ltda.

Hardy received his early education in Chile at the Mackay School and studied German for two years in the German school, before leaving for Glasgow in 1900 in the company of former Glasgow graduate and teacher of the Mackay School, Isaac Winning, where he studied at the Glasgow Academy for two and a half years, gaining a reputation as an outstanding student and sportsman.

In 1902 Hardy apprenticed for five years to Kerr, Anderson & MacLeod Chartered Accountants, during which time he attended the University to study Mercantile Law. He completed his apprenticeship and final exam in 1910, and became a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and Actuaries of Glasgow.

Upon qualification, Hardy intended to return to practice in his home of Valaparaíso. However, in 1911, after being successfully operated on for Appendicitis, Hardy apparently suffered a relapse and died.

Descendants of his siblings still live in Chile today.
