Mariano Joaquin Lorente de Martínez was a student of Science and Engineering at the University from 1903 to 1908. He was born in Bilbao, Spain, but raised in General Villegas, Buenos Aires, Argentina. His father, Severiano Lorente was a famous author, poet, and physician, knighted by Juan Carlos of Spain for developing large-scale domestic lanolin production, and served as Spanish Consul in Argentina.

Mariano enrolled at the University in 1903, the year before his brother Mariano Alejo, and attended classes in Chemistry, Natural Philosophy, Mathematics, Engineering and Electrical Engineering. While at the University, he boarded with his future Scottish wife, Helen Isabella McMillan, and her father, Andrew McMillan in Glasgow. They were later married in Kilmarnock, and in 1910 moved to the USA. There Lorente worked as a civil engineer, employed as the City Planner for Boston, Massachusetts for forty years.
