Biography of Peter MacArthur
Peter MacArthur graduated MB CM in 1865. Born around 1844 in New York City, son of James MacArthur, a wine merchant, MacArthur enrolled at the University in 1861, aged 17, to study Medicine. He attended all academic sessions, including the summer sessions until his graduation in 1865. In the winter session of his final year of study (1864-1865), MacArthur was awarded a second-class certificate in forensic medicine.
MacArthur obtained a Licentiate diploma from the Royal College of Surgeons (LRCS) in Edinburgh, and became a member of the British and Irish Medical Associations as well as a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health. MacArthur practiced medicine in Northern Ireland, and was Medical Officer for the Grey Abbey District of County Down.
