Joaquín María del Castillo y Lanzas
Joaquín María del Castillo y Lanzas, a prominent Mexican politician, journalist and diplomat, attended the University of Glasgow from 1816-1818. He attended the Greek classes of John Young, or "Cocky Bung" as his students nicknamed him, for which he won a prize "for propriety of conduct, diligence and eminent abilities". He also attended Prof. George Jardine's Logic class, for which he was again awarded a prize, this time for "the best specimens of composition on various subjects of Philosophy and Taste, and for distinguished eminence and proficiency in the business of the class".
Castillo y Lanzas returned from his studies in Europe to Mexico, where he held a variety of political and diplomatic positions, among them Congressman, Foreign Secretary, Secretary to the President, and Minister Plenipotentiary to London. As an active journalist and editor, he also became a member of the Real Academia Española.
