Biography of Douglas Maurice MacDowell

Douglas MacDowell
Douglas MacDowell

Douglas Maurice MacDowell (1931-2010) was Professor of Greek from 1971 to 2001. The Douglas MacDowell Chair of Greek is named for him.

MacDowell graduated from Balliol College, Oxford (obtaining firsts in both Moderations and Greats) and taught Classics at Allhallows School and then Merchant Taylors' School from 1954 to 1958. He was an assistant, lecturer, senior lecturer and then reader at the University of Manchester before coming to Glasgow as professor in 1971. Soon after his arrival in Glasgow, Professor MacDowell re-defined the subject by introducing courses in Greek Civilisation which did not require knowledge of the language. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and a Fellow of the British Academy.

In 2011, the University received a £2.4 million bequest from his estate. The funds were used to create a Chair of Greek in his name.
