Biography of Ritchie Girvan
Ritchie Girvan, born circa 1867, was a graduate of the University who was a lecturer in English Language from 1907 until 1947 and Professor from 1947 to 1949. He was Dean of Faculties from 1954 to 1958 and received an honorary LLD in 1950.
Girvan matriculated to study at the University in 1894 and graduated MA in 1899. He was a respected Anglo-Saxon grammarian whose best-known work is Beowulf and the Seventh Century: Language and Content (1935).
