Biography of James Abercromby 1st Baron Dunfermline
James Abercromby, 1st Baron Dunfermline (1776-1858) was Dean of Faculties at the University from 1841 to 1843.
Abercromby was the son of General Sir Ralph Abercromby of Tullibody. He studied at Christ Church, Oxford and was called to the English Bar in 1800. He became the Whig MP for Midhurst in 1807; for Calne, from 1812 to 1832, and for Edinburgh, 1832 to 1839. He was a member of the Privy Council, Chief Baron of the Court of Exchequer in Scotland, Master of the Mint and the first Scot to be elected Speaker of the House of Commons, before his elevation to the peerage in 1839.
