Isabella Blacklock

Biography of Isabella Blacklock

Isabella Blacklock (1869-1928) matriculated in 1892 and on 16 April 1895 became the first woman to graduate MA from the University.

Blacklock was born in Arran, the daughter of a minister. She became a teacher in the East End of Glasgow after graduating, and appears to have been active in politics: in January 1900 the Scotsman reported that she had delivered an address on the Factory Acts at the third annual meeting of the Mid-Lothian Women's Liberal Association in Edinburgh.

In 1906 Blacklock married John Milne Baxter, a mechanical engineer from County Down, and moved to Ireland. She returned to Scotland during the First World War to live in Balmore, near Glasgow.
