John Baird Hunter

Biography of John Baird Hunter

John Baird Hunter graduated from the University of Glasgow MD CM in 1862.

He was born in 1837 in Paisley and his father was William Hunter, an apothecary. He first matriculated at the University in 1858 and attended the same classes as his older brother, William Munn Hunter. He studied classes such as Anatomy, Midwifery, and Forensic Medicine and won second class prizes in many of his subjects.

John Baird Hunter graduated along with his brother in 1862 and John went on to work as a ship surgeon for the British and Canadian Royal Mail Service. He then became the Parochial Medical Officer for the 2nd District Borough of Paisley.

He also wrote a paper that was read before Paisley Medical Society: ‘Free Medical Aid to all, by means of Free Hospitals and a Civil Medical Service’. This was read in 1889, 59 years before the birth of the NHS.

John Hunter died on 4th February 1915.
