Biography of William McDowell of Garthland and Castle Semple

William McDowell of Garthland was Rector of the University from 1795 to 1797.

McDowell matriculated to study at the University in 1761 and became a merchant trading with the West Indies. He was MP for Renfrewshire, 1783 to 1786 and 1802 to 1807; for Ayrshire, 1789 to 1790, and for the Glasgow Burghs, 1790 to 1802.
