Walter Francis Montagu Douglas Scott, 5th Duke of Buccleuch and 7th Duke of Queensberry (1806-1884) was Chancellor of the University from 1878 to 1884.

Buccleuch was educated at Eton and at St John's College, Cambridge, graduating MA in 1827. He succeeded his father to the dukedom of Buccleuch in 1819, becoming one of the country's wealthiest landowners. In 1835 he was created Knight of the Garter and he was invested as a Privy Counsellor in 1842. A staunch Conservative, he was Lord Privy Seal from 1842 to 1846 during the ministry of Sir Robert Peel.
