Major Douglas James Stirling Armstrong of the RAMC was born in Glasgow and attended the High School there. He studied at the University, graduating MB, ChB in 1938, and took his Diploma in Public Health in 1939.

Armstrong was commissioned as a hygiene specialist in the RAMC. He commanded the Field Hygiene Section in Malta from January 1941 until his death on 24 September 1942.
