Denys William England

Biography of Denys William England

Captain Denys William England was born on the 4th July 1918, in Chorlton, Lancashire, England. He was the son of Charles Lawrence England, a civil servant, and Alice England (nee Duckworth), who were living in Beckenham, Kent in the 1940s. Denys studied Engineering at the University and graduated BSc (first class) in 1939.

He joined the Royal Engineers and served with the 150th Railway Construction Company in Italy during World War 2. Captain England was awarded the Military Cross for bravery (Gazetted 19th April 1945). His citation read:

"This Officer has been responsible for all reconnaissances of the Railway Line in the forward Areas both from CHIUSI to AREZZO and forward to FLORENCE between 30th June and 1st August.

With complete disregard of his personal safety he carried out these reconnaissances in close liason with the forward troops under enemy small arms and mortar fire.

With great coolness and skill he produced at the earliest possible moment, first class reports on which complete plans for repair could be based. The consistent accuracy and completeness of these reports enabled repairs to be put in hand with the minimum of delay and greatly accelerated the rate of reconstruction of the railway.

Capt. England has shown outstanding qualities of leadership in his work and in the happiness of his relations with his men. His fearless conduct and devotion to duty have been an inspiration to all with whom he worked."

RECOMMENDED BY: C.O No.1 Railway Const. and Mce Group RE 18 August 1944. Military Cross awarded 19th April 1945.

Captain Denys William England was killed in action on the 21st August 1944 in Italy at the age of 26. Both he and his brother and fellow University alumnus John England are buried in the Cassino War Cemetery, Cassino, Provincia di Frosinone, Lazio, Italy.
