Biography of King James VI and I
James VI and I
James VI (1566-1625), King of Scotland from 1567, succeeded to the throne of England in 1603 when he became James I of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. In 1577, at only eleven years of age, he issued the charter (jointly, with his Regent, Sir James Douglas (c 1516-1581), 4th Earl of Morton) known as the Nova Erectio. The charter refounded the University and granted the College the rights to the income from the rectory and vicarage of the parish church of Govan and confirmed previous grants of rents and other profits.
