Biography of Oliver Cromwell Lord Protector of England, Scotland, and Ireland

Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658), the Parliamentarian soldier and politician who became Lord Protector of England, Scotland, and Ireland in 1653, was a benefactor of the University. In 1633 King Charles I had promised to subscribe £200 sterling to the cost of new buildings for the University. Cromwell ensured that the money was finally paid in 1654.
