Biography of Gilbert Burnet
Gilbert Burnet (1643-1715) was a historian and man of affairs who was Professor of Divinity at the University from 1669 to 1674.
Born in Edinburgh, Burnet was educated at Marischal College Aberdeen. He left the University in 1674 after falling out of favour with his patron, Lord Lauderdale, and fleeing to London. He went into exile in 1685 on the accession of King James VII, returning to England three years later as chaplain to William, Prince of Orange. He was Bishop of Salisbury from 1689 until his death.
