Description

The Dowanhill Prizes were founded in 1865 by John Buchanan, undergraduate in Arts from 1821 to 1824, who became a merchant in Glasgow. The prizes are for "excellence in the Art of Oratory and Declamation" and are awarded annually to students of Divinity at the end of their third or fourth session of attendance in the Faculty, by the votes of their fellow students. Competitors must be students of Divinity who are members of the Church of Scotland, have completed three or four sessions in the Faculty of Divinity and have attended for two sessions an elocution class conducted by a teacher approved by the Senate.
