Crawfurd's Bursary

List of Awards

Description

Crawfurd's Bursary was founded in 1576 by Thomas Crawfurd (or Crauford, or Crawford) of Jordanhill (1530-1603), a soldier and Provost of Glasgow in 1577. He was the first person to found a bursary at the University from his own means.

Crawford gave the University an annual rent of 16 bolls of oatmeal from the mill of Partick, for the maintenance of a bursar in Philosophy. The bursar was to be presented by him or by one of his successors or, failing them, by the Principal and Regents.
